Who is served by Hancock Center?

Individual and group dance/movement therapy sessions are offered for children, adults, families. Therapy sessions and classes occur at Hancock Center, as well as in elementary schools, senior centers and other agencies.

Outreach services are provided to professionals, students and the general public. Referrals are received from public and private social service agencies, hospitals, community programs, educational facilities, and mental health professionals in private practice. Many people seek Hancock Center services without professional referrals.


Dance/movement therapists help clients with -
-poor sense of identity (body image, self esteem, shyness, anxiety)

-relationship issues

-sexual, physical and/or emotional abuse

-cognitive delays and/or neurological problems

-other therapeutic issues


Strengths and skills that dance/movement therapy helps to develop include -
-positive body awareness

-anger management

-creativity and playfulness

-problem solving

-communication and parenting skills



PROGRAMMING INCLUDES:


Dance/Movement Therapy
-Individual, group and family sessions
-"Womensgrowth" dance/movement therapy groups for women.
-Self and Social Identity groups for children.
-Groups for children with issues of sexual and/or physical abuse

-Creative movement classes for children and adults

-Courses and individual sessions in Alexander technique, a method of movement behavior and awareness that improves one's ability to move with ease and economy of effort.

-Expressive movement groups for older adults

-Workshops and classes co-sponsored with the UW-Madison, Division of Continuing Studies-Department of Continuing Education in the Arts and the UW-Madison Dept. of Health and Human Issues.

-Statewide outreach, in-service training and presentations -Coordination with other community agencies, schools and Dane County Dept. of Human Services.
