What is Dance/Movement Therapy

Dance/movement therapy is a form of psychotherapy which incorporates creative and expressive movement. This process provides an integrated experience of body, mind and spirit. Dance/movement therapy helps develop healthy self image, communication skills and emotional stability.

Participants in individual, group and family sessions at Hancock Center explore and express issues from past and present in both nonverbal and verbal ways. This safe and nurturing environment supports an exploration of one's strengths and healthy potential. What is dance/movement therapy and who is qualified to provide it?

Dance/movement therapy is a mental health profession that uses both creative and everyday movement in the process of helping individuals learn more about themselves and their interactions with others. In this unique form of psychotherapy, individuals experience and express themselves with an integration of words and movement.

Registered dance/movement therapists have completed a master's degree in an approved master's program or an equivalent course of study approved by the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA). This training includes the study of movement and of psychology.

Registered dance/movement therapists (DTR's) must continue to meet the requirements of registry, which maintain high standards of ethical behavior set by the ADTA. The ADTA was formed in 1966 and is a member of the
National Coalition of Creative Arts Therapies.
