Introduction to Dance/Movement Therapy Workshop
Saturday, May 17, 2008. 9:30 am - 5:30 pm.

Interested in dance/movement therapy? Hancock Center is holding a one-day workshop introducing the field of dance/movement therapy. We will look at dance/movement therapy's roots in modern dance, its development in psychiatric hospitals, its national professional association, contemporary approaches and populations served. Participants will have the opportunity to experience simple group-movement interactions that illustrate some of the basic premises of the field. Participants are invited to bring case examples to directly explore applications to their own work.

In this group, we will use movement expression & verbal discussion to explore such topics as body image, self-worth, interpersonal relationships, & setting boundaries.
No prior movement experience necessary.

GROUP CLASSES IN ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE

Experience your natural potential to move with ease in a supportive environment. Learn skills of self-observation and tension release in everyday movement. Explore subtle movements to achieve greater body awareness and economy of effort. Alexander Technique may benefit performing artists, those with common physical problems including arthritis, and anyone desiring to improve the quality of their everyday movements. No experience necessary. The instructor, Deborah Thomas, PhD, ADTR, has been studying and teaching Alexander Technique since 1978 and has trained with Master Alexander teacher Marjorie Barstow.

Session I: June 17 - July 8
Session II: July 22 - Aug 12
Tuesdays, 7-8:30 pm.
$80 / 4-week session
$140 / both sessions

Children's On-Site Program

Creative Dance for Developmentally Delayed Teenagers

A therapeutic class filled with fun, dance and music. This class will promote self-esteem, positive body image and successful peer relationships.

Alexander Technique Sessions Offered

This method, developed by F.M. Alexander many years ago, helps one move with ease and economy of effort. It is based upon a concept of body use which centers on the relationship of the head and neck. Light touch is used as a method of cueing the body. Taught by Deborah Thomas, PhD, ADTR.

 



Outreach and Special Events

Scheduled outreach services by contract.

Movement therapy groups for at-risk children and Prevention through Movement classes at Lapham, Lowell and Marquette Elementary Schools. (The In-School Prevention and Therapy program is partially funded by United Way of Dane County)
