EMPOWERMENT GROUPS
EMPOWERMENT THROUGH MOVEMENT:
A Therapy Group for Women
So many of the issues that women face in their struggles to become whole, valued, and equal have to do with the culture, their bodies, and thoughts associated with with their body-selves. Empowerment for women is a group designed to creatively explore blocks to feeling connected to one's authenticity and power.
Movement therapists deal with many of the same issues as verbal therapists - self-identity and acceptance, limit setting, assertiveness, communication, relationships with others, stress reduction and relaxation. As therapists, we develop movement experiences collaboratively based on the material clients bring. The overall goal of dance/movement therapy is to integrate physical, cognitive, and emotional expression.
A typical group begins with sharing the experiences of the past week and any current problems members might want to explore in group. For example, to discover self-identity, we might explore individual movement preferences such as controlled vs. free movement to discover what such preferences might reveal about activities we find nourishing or destructive. The group ends with verbal processing of the movement experience.
We will use movement expression & verbal discussion to explore topics such as body image, self-worth, interpersonal relationships, and setting boundaries. No prior movement experience necessary.
